Oxford trip -- 24th February 2007

From Alice in the wonderland to Lord of the ring, and with the Harry Potter shooting location to boot, this is the wonderful world of Oxford. Famous not only as a place for inspirations for JK Tolkien (Lord of the Ring author) and Miss Potter, Oxford is no doubt the centre of academic excellency.

I got a golden chance to pay a visit to this classic yet intuitive place on February. First destination I came across is the famous Christ Church College, Oxford University. A total of thirteen British Prime Ministers received their education here as well as Albert Einstein!!! The charm of this College also attracted the director of Harry Potter to shoot on location here.

As it is very rainy on the day I visit this majestic city, we just quickly glance through the places...

We did visited the Bodleian Library, which is one of the oldest libraries in the world. But due to the extremely time constraint, we didn't pay the entrance fees to get in there.. A bit regret later on. =/

We stumbled upon the natural science museum which is just opposite the Blackwell book store and decided to spend the rest of our time there. Once we got in, we are surprised on how many valuable clocks work being displayed here, all in working condition!!! Saw one wall clock which date back to 17th century and it is still working perfectly! Alarm clock at that time? WOW, it is mind blowing...

chinese clock.jpgChina made clock in dragon shape. It uses joss stick to count the time.

microscope.jpgmicroscope2.jpgSome of the amazing collections of compound microscopes. Not sure whether it is gold plated though... Hehe...

royal microscope.jpgroyal microscope explanation.jpgMicroscope made especially for King George III. Amazing!!!

penicillin.jpgThe first Penicillin culture in Britain. It is being used as a antibiotic in the army camp.

einstein blackboard.jpgeinstein blackboard explaination.jpgAlbert Einstein Writing on the black board! This is the highlight of the visit in the museum! I am actually facing the actual writing of the Greatest Genius in the world!

A visit in the museum is like taking a history class in scientific discovery. I am amazed on how science has evolved. From compound microscope to Electron microscope, from the raw penicillin to chemical derived penicillin and other better antibiotics, from the Theory of Relativity of the creation of nuclear power. (not that i support nuclear power), but it all being displayed in front of you. And it is REAL! Not diagram on books, it is real samples here in front of you.

Next destination is the Blackwell Bookstore. It amazed me on how huge the bookstore and the layout is really interesting and a sight to behold!

I manage to catch a glimpse of 2nd edition of The Evolution of Species by Charles Darwin. The book date back to 1859 and it still look well maintained! This is the book that stated the hypothesis that organisms are evolved from time to time.

His theories in a nutshell:

Darwin's theory is based on key observations and inferences drawn from them:[3]

  1. Species have great fertility. They make more offspring than can grow to adulthood.

  2. Populations remain roughly the same size, with modest fluctuations.

  3. Food resources are limited, but are relatively stable over time.

  4. An implicit struggle for survival ensues.

  5. In sexually reproducing species, generally no two individuals are identical.

  6. Some of these variations directly impact the ability of an individual to survive in a given environment.

  7. Much of this variation is inheritable.

  8. Individuals less suited to the environment are less likely to survive and less likely to reproduce, while individuals more suited to the environment are more likely to survive and more likely to reproduce.

  9. The individuals that survive are most likely to leave their inheritable traits to future generations.

  10. This slowly effected process results in populations that adapt to the environment over time, and ultimately, after interminable generations, the creations of new varieties, and ultimately, new species.

Browsing through some old books as well ( dating back to 17th century). It is an unbelievable experience.

redcliff.jpgOh, last but not least, Definitely have to snap photo in front of the Radcliffe Camera! It is the landmark of Oxford and it is a Library built in 1748 in the Palladian style.

The whole trip is a fun one. How I wish I can have another chance to pay another visit to this beautiful city. I will come to Oxford again...

random thought

Just woke up from a nap..Tired day. spend the whole afternoon to study my notes. Finally did it after 2 weeks of procrastination. When I woke up from my short nap, a lot of thoughts rushed in my mind. I am overwhelmed by the pressures and my worries.

I can't see my directions... in a stupid blue mood. Money worries, time management worries, PhD worries... The part time job seems to take a toll on my time, I haven't hear from my PhD applications yet, while my coursemates have been called for an interview. I am worried.

I miss hugs and kisses so much. I miss the time when I don't need to cook and have the right to buy a takeaway. I am tired, yet I need to cook whether I like it or not. I wanted to be successful and I wanted to love and to be loved! Don't judge me by my statements, you never know me yet. I feel so lonely, ----CENSORED----

Argh... stop worrying and start working! OK, I will go take a shower and chill!!! Damn you "SLAP" PIG!!!

Weird Three Mobile services

I decided to send in my nokia N series for a service as the front camera used for tele conference is not working. To send in the phone is as easy as ABC, I called up the service centre, and they sent me an envelope to send them my phone. Painless.

Now now, I figured that as I am out of the N series, I need to have a backup phone. Alas, Justin's old SE phone comes in handy. I borrow the phone from him, then backing up all my data from Nokia to my laptop. Just as I inserted the 3 mobile SIM card in the SE phone, it can't detect it... I insert my other malaysian in active sim card, and it works...

A call to Three mobile call centre revealed that the SIM card only works only THREE branded mobile.. HUH?? What if I want to upgrade my mobile to an unlocked mobile? Strange strange way of doing business. This way it can't retain the customers... Lei Kah Seng, tell me how this can attract customer??

I have no choice now to get a loan phone from the city centre... Walau e...

Ebay bidder bastard

Certainly in this world you can't expect every single one is as nice as me(ahem!).
In notts alone, I have encountered 2 separate incidents that made me feels like this is not a perfect society after all.

The first incident happen a week before christmas, 2 local bastards steal a scarf from a stall and throw at me, accusing me of stealing it! Luckily my notts friends who happen to witness the whole incident come up to me and explain the whole incident to the store owner. IF not because of my friends, I think I might stay a night in the police station while waiting for them to check on the CCTV installed on the street.

Now now, the second notts bastard come to light on eBay. I advertise on the ebay to sell my pen drive, stated postal only. This bastard won the item and didn't pay up. To make the matter worse, he wanted to pickup the item himself/herself. I try to explain to him/her that only postal. Ever since, he/she started to send abusive and unwelcome emails to me. I have reported the case to eBay. Hope they will help me out. IF the matter gone worse, I will consider to make a police report, IF, i say if he started to haul racists sentences to me. Well, I am not gonna sell him any items next time as other sellers experienced the same thing. Damn BASTARD. Hope eBay will blacklist him and bar him from bidding AGAIN!!!
